Dancing with Death (and the Dow): Enduring Through the Crash

  • April 7, 2025
  • Tony Matesi

The stock market is crashing. Again.
Tariffs. Politics. Panic.
The kind of headlines that make your stomach drop before breakfast.

For some, this means retirement accounts shrinking. For others, it’s the creeping dread of another financial storm we’re not ready for.
I get it.
I’ve felt that squeeze too.

But here’s what I’ve learned after a decade of deliberately seeking out suffering:

When you’ve danced with death—truly danced—market crashes just don’t hit the same.

When you’ve crawled through the dark, when you’ve hallucinated from exhaustion, when your body’s broken and your mind is whispering quit, you gain something most people never find: clarity through chaos.

Not because you’re invincible.
But because you’ve faced something worse than numbers on a screen.
You’ve faced yourself. And you chose to keep going.

This market panic?
It’s just another version of adversity. A more civilized kind.
You can’t muscle through it, but you can endure it.

Here’s what I remind myself in moments like this:

  • The pain is temporary. The losses, the stress—they’ll pass.
  • The world has fallen apart before, and we’re still here.
  • I’ve faced worse. I’ve survived worse. I’ve rebuilt from ashes.

So, do what we learned in the race:
Control what you can. Accept what you can’t. Keep moving forward.

  • Move your body.
  • Breathe deep.
  • Talk to someone who gets it.
  • Shut off the noise and anchor to the moment you’re in.

And remember—when the world feels out of control, your ability to endure becomes your greatest asset. Not your portfolio. Not your job title. Not your follower count.

Just you.
Unbreakable. Because you’ve been broken before—and rebuilt stronger.

You Are the Legend.

Crashes come. Chaos follows.
But legends?
We adapt. We survive. We lead.

If you’re feeling it right now, if this market drop is chewing at your peace, take a breath. Go outside. Put your feet in the dirt. And remind yourself:

You’ve already faced your worst day. This? This is just noise.

Somewhere along the way, masculinity got hijacked.

It was whittled down to something hollow. Loud. Fragile. A checklist of traits that have more to do with fear than strength.
